Is music a helping or disturbing factor in meditation?

Well, it can be both. It depends on your mindset and the kind of music you listen to.

A lot of people think meditation can only be done in absolute silence. They experience every signal from the outside world as disturbing. This attitude is perfectly okay – but it’s not the only one. Meditation is not about shutting the world out. It’s about allowing the world in. And as music is part of the world, you can welcome it to your meditation. And this can be very helpful.

It is scientifically proven that music can have a calming effect on your body and mind. Music can slow down your breathing, release your stress level and lift your mood. If you listen to a calming piece of music that you like, it can help you to enter a state of deep relaxation.

For music meditation try to focus your thoughts on the sound of the music. Try to listen to the movement of the melody, the color of the different instruments, the change of the harmonies, every little detail – try to dive deep into the music and feel its impact on your body and soul. If you find yourself thinking about other things – just slowly move your thought back to the sound of the music and the sensations you feel.

Music meditation can lead you to a state of deep meditation and relaxation. Just give it a try!

Finding the right music

If you want to meditate with music, keep in mind:

  1. Listen to relaxing music
    If you listen to heavy metal it’s going to be difficult to enter a meditative state. So, try to find a piece of music, that relaxes you. Maybe a classical piece, a slow lounge track or some Asian music.
  1. Choose music you like
    Find a piece of music, that you like to listen to – this is always a subjective matter. If you like slow jazz or electronic music – listen to it! Maybe you prefer to listen to a classical piano piece. Just feel free to try different music and find out, how it affects you.
  1. Moderate volume
    Listen to the music at a moderate volume setting. You should hear it clearly, but you should not perceive it as loud.
